Against All Odds
For many of us the conditions and circumstances of being a refugee is unimaginable. Yet, with the number of asylum seekers arriving to Australia increasing by 19% in 2008, this is a reality for which more Australians need increased awareness and understanding. The UNHCR has recently released an interactive game that gives participants an insight into the refugee experience. Designed for secondary students, the site has additional teaching resources that can be adapted for adult learning environments as well.

It’s Your Right!
Many Australian arrivals face challenges integrating into the daily life of a new country and this is experience is magnified when English is their second language. A new resource has been released, aimed at migrants, to increase their human rights awareness and clarify common misunderstandings that often arise from a lack of knowledge or miscommunication. The tailored resource, which is targeted at adult learners, delivers core key messages related to unfair treatment and discrimination while at the same time enhancing participants’ English standards. Here’s to getting one step closer to every individual in Australia understanding their rights and responsibilities!
